In January, events at Convento do Espinheiro offer guests the opportunity to experience the cuisine and wines typical of Alentejo, through a cooking class and wine tasting. The characteristics of the region’s gastronomy and wines will be presented, using local ingredients and traditional methods.

Take advantage of the first month of the year to connect with nature and gastronomy at Convento do Espinheiro. In January, we offer activities focused on the production and tasting of the main typical dishes of Alentejo within our hotel.

Firstly, the success of Alentejo cuisine is based on the mixture of regional products prepared by the skilled hands of the Alentejo people. This culinary talent comes from the hard years spent living in the countryside, with scarce economic resources. As a result, Alentejo cuisine has become simple, but with an imaginative touch of preparing seasonal ingredients. In this sense, the aim is to create dishes whose origins are clear to distinguish. There are essential ingredients for this type of traditional cuisine, such as the well-known pork and lamb meats. The essential seasonings are olive oil, coriander, pennyroyal and oregano, grown in the fields using ancestral techniques. And of course, we cannot ignore the Alentejo bread that delights both residents and visitors!

There is nothing better than accompanying these main dishes and desserts with the vast array of wines produced in Alentejo, on brown Mediterranean soils. Surprising for their quality, color and exuberant aroma. This custom of production and consumption was a legacy left by the Romans, making the region rich and diverse, recognized in every corner of the world.

ALENTEJO COOKING CLASS
To help you learn more about how to prepare some of these typical dishes of Alentejo cuisine, Convento do Espinheiro invites you to take a cooking class at the hotel restaurant on 14 January . Here you will learn how to prepare some of these recipes, guided by our chef Jorge Peças, a natural connoisseur of Alentejo cuisine. Don't miss the opportunity to gain knowledge and impress your family and friends at dinners and lunches.

TALK WITH WINES FROM PRODUCERS FROM OUR ALENTEJO
Enjoy a wine chat with producers from our Alentejo plains in the Convent's wine cellar, where you will taste the region's fresh and typical grape varieties, on the 21st of January. You can choose between red wines, characterized as full-bodied and velvety, and smooth and elegant white wines. You can also choose the fruity and attractive rosé wines, to enjoy in the best company.

TOUR TO ÉVORA
To end these two weekends in the best possible way, you can enjoy a guided tour of the beautiful city of Évora, taking place on the 15th and 22nd of January , where you will get to know its landmarks and hear a detailed explanation of the history of the places that led to this Alentejo region being considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Please note that places are limited, so you will need to register in advance to guarantee your presence at this cultural experience.
